On 4 February 2013, His Excellency Mr. Somchai Powcharoen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand, on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, presented a donation of 1 million Thai Baht (32,425.42 USD) to Ambassador Kabiru Garba, Under Secretary, Administration and Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in support of Nigeria’s Flood Relief and Rehabilitation efforts.
His Excellency Ambassador of Thailand conveyed to Ambassador Kabiru Garba, the heartfelt condolences and sincerest sympathy from the Royal Thai Government and the people of Thailand for the devastating consequences of flood that hit and submerged large areas of residence, agricultural lands, communities and local habitats in many states of Nigeria in 2012, the worst flood that the country has ever experienced in 50 years with the grave loss of lives and subsequent homeless citizens.
On behalf of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian people, Ambassador Garba expressed his sincere appreciation to the Royal Thai Government and the Thai people for this gracious gesture and sympathy which reflect the bond of friendship between Nigeria and Thailand. The Thai donation will be delivered to the responsible Committee for flood relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Thai people immensely empathize with the suffering of the Nigerian flood victims as Thailand herself underwent an unprecedented deluge nationwide in 2011. In this regard, the Royal Thai Government and the Thai people commend the tremendous efforts of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to rescue its citizens, provide shelter, assistance and ongoing relief supplies as well as the determination to rebuild and rehabilitate the affected areas.
The Ambassador of Thailand wishes a speedy and full recovery to those who are affected by the flood disaster and is confident that the good people of Nigeria, known for their resilience and resourcefulness, will overcome the challenges with strength and grace.
